X-ray delivery

  • 9.3 keV, 1600-1700 uJ photon flux, beam down once due to Big Brother intervention. But the signal on HIREX was less than 10 counts.

Optical laser delivery

  • ns laser for particle illumination inside the chamber
  • another ns laser to visualize the tip of capillary on top of the chamber

Achievements/Observations

  • Measured granulovirus

  • Hit rate of defocused beam was similar or less than with focused beam, Q range is smaller than with focused beam.

  • Without dryer, hit rate is more than twice.

Issues

  • BIG BROTHER is intervened due to HIREX and beam was down due to that. But the count on HIREX with Al1.2 was less than 100 count.

Instrument status

  • AGIPD HV off.
  • AGIPD gate valve closed and pinned.
  • Attenuators set to thickest diamond.
  • Vacuum valves closed.
  • AGIPD breaks enguaged
  • ns Lasers off
  • HIREX is out

X-ray delivery

  • 9.3 keV, 1400 uJ photon flux

Optical laser delivery

  • ns laser for particle illumination inside the chamber
  • another ns laser to visualize the tip of capillary on top of the chamber

Achievements/Observations

  • Measured GV for ~2 hours, hit rate is ~0.0003 (from Karabo TST/SFX/MONITOR/sfx, 1 = 100 %)
  • Measured PSI with different condition as below :
    1) without dryer : as we observed sample deposited on the tube connected to the inlet of dryer yesterday. Black tube is coated to avoid any deposition of particle on the wall)
    2) without both lasers : to avoid any heat effect if laser produces heat
    3) without EtOH : EtOH can disolve PSI crystals

Issues

  • PSI sample is not delivered well to the interaction region.
  • When adjust the skimmer at first, I did not run liquid flow. After the skimmer distance is adjusted to the reference pressure on Pressure at injector position, we started run sample and it increased pressures not only on pressure next to the skimmer and injector inlet, but also the pressure of IRU chamber. So it triggered the valve at upstream of IRU chamber (SPB_IRU_VAC/VALVE/VALVE_INLINE_1) to close. It is solved by adjusting skimmer gap again while the liquid flow is running.

Instrument status

  • AGIPD HV off.
  • AGIPD gate valve closed and pinned.
  • Attenuators set to thickest diamond.
  • Vacuum valves closed.
  • AGIPD breaks enguaged
  • ns Lasers off
  • HIREX is out
  77   31 May 2025, 07:30 Yoonhee KimSPBShift summary

X-ray delivery

  • 9.3 keV, 2000 uJ at the beginning, 1600 uJ after 2AM. There was downtime around 15 minutes due to gun issue.
  • FXE used the beam until 23:30.

Optical laser delivery

  • ns laser for particle illumination inside the chamber,
  • another ns laser to visualize the tip of capillary on top of the chamber

Achievements/Observations

  • Measured PSI
  • Hit rate is extremely low. We could see some peaks from AGIPD preview, but it was difficult to see it from the hit finder.

Issues

  • Sample capillary line was clogged twice.
  • From the images of capillary tip and particle scattering (rayleigh / mie scattering), it seems it works fine. But hit rate is too low.

Instrument status

  • AGIPD HV off.
  • AGIPD gate valve closed and pinned.
  • Attenuators set to thickest diamond.
  • Vacuum valves closed.
  • AGIPD breaks enguaged
  • ns Lasers off
  • HIREX is out
  76   30 May 2025, 07:16 Yoonhee KimSPBShift summary

X-ray delivery

  • 9.3 keV, 2000 uJ pulse energy. Beam was unstable at the beginning.

Optical laser delivery

  • ns laser for particle illumination inside the chamber,
  • another ns laser to visualize the tip of capillary on top of the chamber

Achievements/Observations

  • Measured GV for ~ 2 hours

Issues

  • PSI from the first reservoir was leaking
  • Concentration of PSI seems low (judged by seeing camera for liquid jet delivery).
  • We could not see any diffraction from PSI by both AGIPD preview and OnDA (same setting with GV used)

Instrument status

  • AGIPD HV off.
  • AGIPD gate valve closed and pinned.
  • Attenuators set to thickest diamond.
  • Vacuum valves closed.
  • AGIPD breaks enguaged
  • ns Lasers off

X-ray delivery

  • 9.3 keV, 1400-1600 uJ pulse energy, ~1000 uJ for 10 minutes

Optical laser delivery

  • ns laser for particle illumination inside the chamber,
  • another ns laser to visualize the tip of capillary on top of the chamber

Achievements/Observations

  • Installed new YAG and powder capillary
  • Measured GV from defocused beam for 5 runs (run 6-10) and focused beam for the rest of the beamtime (run 11-24, 28-42). In total 34 runs (170 minutes)
  • Hit rate with focused beam and high sample flow rate (15 sample, 15~20 EtOH) : ~0.02~0.03 %$
  • Hit rate with 3ul/min sample + 3ul/min EtOH : ~0.08 % with this sample

Issues

  • After take new darks for HIREX, the intensity was too high so BIG BROTHER was intervened. Solved by change filter from Al_1.1 to Al_1.2.

**X-ray delivery**
- 9.34 keV, 1200-1400 uJ pulse energy

**Optical laser delivery**
- illumination laser

**Achievements/Observations**
-  Managed to synchronize droplets for some runs, resulting in high hit, averaging rate ~ 8-10% and spiking up to 20%.

**Issues**
-  Synchronization and stable delivery  are challenging
- Beam was down several times

**Instrument status**
- AGIPD HV off.
- AGIPD gate valve closed and pinned.
- Attenuators set to thickest diamond.
- Vacuum valves closed.
- AGIPD breaks engadged
- ns Lasers off
- HIREX  is handled by FXE, but maybe better to check in the morning
- PAM interlock on and shutter open
- Left the gas at 5 for 0 flow (and no noise) from GP13 flowmeter D, during the night it was at 0, and in the morning it was filled with air... Tonight we leave it this way and in the morning let us know if it worked or not.

**X-ray delivery**
- 9.34 keV, 1400-1600 uJ pulse energy

**Optical laser delivery**
- illumination laser

**Achievements/Observations**
-  Got crystal hits with a device, bypassing the valve, and most importantly the filter. We checked a drop before and after filter and there were no crystals after the filter.
- Managed to control the droplet formation for some periods - but with crystals being blocked by the filter. Did not manage to synchronize the droplets to the X-ray though.

**X-ray delivery**
- 9.34 keV, 1400-1600 uJ pulse energy

**Optical laser delivery**
- illumination laser

**Achievements/Observations**
-  Collected some NQO1 data
- Had some hours to play around with HV with the old device. We observed a few things:
     - Without HV we could get close to 10 hz, but with jitter of +/-3hz
     - With HV at 1.2V, we clearly saw a strong effect on the droplet hz, could go from 10 Hz to 20 Hz, but the problem of the jitter remains, this looks like the main issue have the droplets frequency under control
     - We observed that with water the diode signal was one single peak, whereas with sample there were a few peaks for the whole droplet width, we tested and it indeed seems that the crystals in the droplets either refracted away or absorbed a portion of the beam to yield that diode laser peak profile...

Delayed start of SA1 (and SA3) beam delivery

The beam delivery to the North branch (SASE1 / SASE3) was delayed by 24h compared to the plan due to a malfunction of the smoke detection system in XTD4 and the subsequent investigation and repair.
A ZZ-access to XTD4 on tuesday 13.5.2025 morning to resolve this issue (and scheduled for 7h-9h) turned into a full day access until after 18h, thus the first day of the XFELO study couldn't happen.

SASE1 beam then started at 18h46 with immediately 4.5 mJ at 6.95 keV (0.18 nm). For the night program, at 22h the photon energy was changed to 9.6 keV (0.129 nm).
The planned daytime SASE1 activity (XFELO study) started finally on wednesday at 9h20 when SASE1 was switched back to 6.95 keV.

Throughout all this time the South branch was unaffected and the blue week program in SASE2 happened as scheduled. SASE3 beam delivery was started only on wednesday morning.
