Title:
Spin states of FeS and FeHx at and beyond telluric core-mantle boundary conditions by simultaneous x-ray emission and x-ray diffraction
Abstract:

The aim of this proposal is to explore the evolution of the spin state in iron sulfide FeS and binary iron hydrides FeHx at extreme conditions. We will combine x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), x-ray diffraction (XRD), diamond anvil cell (DAC) technology, and the unique properties of XFEL radiation to create simultaneous high p and high T conditions via x-ray heating. The ultimate goal of this investigation is to reveal the spin state of our samples at p/T conditions close to and above those of the CMBs of Mercury, Mars, and Earth in the solid and liquid phase.
