Title:
Kinetics of structural phase transition in the dynamic-diamond anvil cell (dDAC): bridging static and shock compression
Abstract:

Studying materials response to pressure at intermediate strain rates of 10^2/s-10^4/s has significant implications for kinetic models of geological and materials science processes. Until today it has not been possible to study materials at these strain rates because of the lack of pressure drivers and fast enough x-ray diffraction probes. Our community team proposes to study the material response at strain rates up to 10^3/s by implement improved piezo-electric driven diamond anvil cells (dDAC) technology at the EuXFEL to make use of the superb time structure and flux at high energies to conduct time resolved powder diffraction experiments. We will demonstrate the capabilities of the new dDAC setup by studying prototypical high- (Bi, Ti) and low-Z (H2O, N2) materials that have previously been investigated at lower/higher strain rates and have shown significant deviations in phase transitions pressures and bonding characteristics but have not been studies in strain rate regime 0.1-10^3/
