Title:
Probing the local structural features in supercooled atomic liquids during the liquid-to-solid phase transition (derived from 2272)
Abstract:

The underlying mechanisms of the crystallization process are still not fully understood. We propose here an experiment based on the combination of microscopic liquid jets in a vacuum and x-ray cross correlation analysis to probe the local structural features during the early stages of fast crystallization in supercooled atomic liquids. The proposed experiments have the potential to significantly advance our knowledge of the most fundamental aspects of crystal nucleation and growth, which are of great importance for understanding the interplay between crystallization and glass formation.
